Britain had an entire empire with the largest navy in the world as well as many well armed troops at its disposal. America had:

  1. a better understanding of the land in Lexington and Concord.
  2. the for more attached attitude to the war. Their entire livelihood was at stake in this war, Britain not so much.
  3. a lower cost of transportation or troops.
  4. the aid of enemies of Britain.(?)
