I believe that the Beat generation writers wanted to defeat traditionalism in America. Given that they wrote after the WWII, they wanted to eradicate the conformist society in the US that seemed unnatural and uptight to them. They fought for freedom of speech, and breaking the rules, and wanted to influence people into thinking for themselves and not doing what the government tells them to do.
